My journey through NMDC Hyderabad Marathon

Introduction:

Five years ago, I used to watch my friends embark on running and cycling adventures and  travelling across the country, I would tell myself “What a crazy fellow”. Little did I know that the COVID 19  lockdown in 2020 would flip my perspective on life and physical well-being. I transitioned from being a casual observer to an active participant, stepping into the world of endurance sports like cycling and running. My journey, from struggling with a 5km run to completing 8 half marathons in a year, has been a testament to the transformative power of sports.

In this blog I will take you through the journey from  Hussain Sagar to Gachibowli stadium the start to finish line of NMDC Hyderabad marathon.

Discovering the Purpose:

Amidst the pain, sprains and being regularly irregular in running during my early days, I found guidance from fellow runners to a structured training and the idea of aiming for a marathon. Beat yesterday the motto to improve every other day became my motivation. In August 2022, I ran my first official half marathon in Hyderabad, a city that held deep significance in my life.

The Hyderabad Connection:

Hyderabad, a city known for its Biryani, Charminar, Pearls and warm-hearted people, hosts a marathon organised by Hyderabad Runners for the past 12 years.

Renowned for its challenging route with numerous flyovers and massive crowd to navigate, this marathon serves as a litmus test for endurance runners to gauge their progress. Beyond the physical challenges, the event embodies the camaraderie of the running community.

The Marathon Aura:

From the moment one steps in Hyderabad, the aura of marathon is palpable. Familiar faces from previous races converge, sharing stories and expectations for the race. The expo preceding the marathon acts as a hub of excitement and preparation, offering gear, nutritional supplements and a chance to meet fellow athletes. The stage is set for the upcoming race.

Race Day Preparation:

Preparing for the marathon entails meticulous planning, from pacing strategies to gear selection. The checklist is meticulously crafted and the night before the race is dedicated to rest and anticipation. The camaraderie of friends sharing the journey adds to the excitement and support.

Race Day Unleashed:

On race day, the holding area is charged with energy as runners warm up and exchange their journey to the stage. The starting flag-off exactly at 5:30 AM punctuates the early morning air and the journey begins. The route marked by medical aid and hydration stations every 2 kms leads runners through a myriad of emotions and thoughts of being supported all through the journey.

Running with Purpose:

The marathon becomes a platform for meaningful causes, as runners don T-shirts with messages of awareness and encouragement. Supporters on the sidelines further boost spirits, reminding runners of the purpose they carry through each step. People promoting save soil foundation or some spreading awareness about AUTISM would also trigger a thought to contribute to the society.

Autism not by choice: Running to make people aware

Sights and Sounds Along the Way:

Live bands, DJs, cheerleaders, and even residents come out to create an electric atmosphere. The sound of defence Band along the route also gives goosebumps with a sense of patriotism. The synergy of the crowd comprising school children, senior citizens fuels determination to complete the race in-spite of the elevation and humidity. The moment the finish line nears, a sense of accomplishment takes over and gives a push to sprint and finish strong.

Crossing the Finish Line:

Sprinting toward the finish line embodies the culmination of months of preparation. Every participant’s journey is unique, and the finish line symbolizes a personal triumph over challenges. It’s a competition with oneself, a chance to measure progress.

Post-Run Celebrations:

The post-run area is a carnival of emotions and stories. Runners share their experiences, congratulate each other and revel in their achievement. The music and euphoria of thousands of participants celebrating their triumph at one place is beyond words to describe. The sense of togetherness is infectious and inspiring each participant to return better prepared the following year.

Capturing the Memories:

Race photos immortalise the moments of triumph, sparking smiles and motivating others to join the journey. Sharing these memories on social media garners encouragement and fosters a sense of community. special acknowledgement to oneglint for the amazing pics.

Conclusion:

The Hyderabad Marathon transcends being just a race; it’s a celebration of resilience, camaraderie and personal growth. As first-time runners, seasoned athletes, and children alike cross the finish line, they collectively embody the spirit of the event. The marathon serves as a reminder that embracing physical challenges can lead to transformative self-discovery and a deeper connection to a global community striving for excellence and well-being.https://youtube.com/live/Mm3TqLoN3rc?feature=shared

    Dear SumanJi,
I can almost feel the race by your narration here. Almost am able to run the race route all over again the only difference being I am now smiling because I was lucky to be a participant and able to relate it as it is. Contrast it with race day when the smile was because it was painful and difficult.

The preparation part is not always on track more so with we doctors whose other obligations can take a toll on the long runs or the start to the preparation is delayed further by unexpected developments in family. Health in self and family is not a given and as doctors we have to be always at the side of patients—long run or otherwise.

Similarly, at the gears front; the less the better. Because the difficulty to find your gears on preparation day and then on the race day can be a reason for malperformance as that plays on the mind. Over the years I have brought it down to almost zero gears: no shoes, no socks, 5 years old running paint and nothing else. Absolutely bare minimal. That saves time from everything getting misplaced or not found before a prep run—which is a rule with kids working from home.

On the above backdrop the preface expo can be easily missed as all you need is the BIB which anyone can collect. And all you need to do is complete your Saturday clinic at 10:00pm and start for the race day. Largely no sleep and that is again the part of minimalist approach—not to be dependent on sleep. As invariably sleep will be compromised if patients are to be attended and your goal of being at the side of the patients during the challenging time of a fever season—the august mid and end usually is a time where post rain fever of multiple aetiologies creep up.

So no gear. No sleep. No time to think and organise yourself. Reaching the start point on time as a trophy in itself. No Zumba amp session as you hardly make it 2-5 mins before the start time. But once you reach there the minimalist mind then remains focused with one foot and avoiding a peeble as it can cause a sharp lanccinating pain if caught. So now the mind is busy scanning the road always and has nothing else to think for 6+ hrs . Then this approach with give a shout-out to the enthusiastic people around and you hardly know that you are running. Half cramps on the hill is a rule if not a complete cramp and that is again the part of the journey.

Then come the bad patches of road where pebbles—sharp at those—can’t be avoided and you dance (hop) over them and make your way through that joyous grade-10 pain. Somehow when things look like they are stopping like a bike on a petrol about to be over it drops to Duk-dulk-du-du-duk. Then druuuuuuuuuuuuumm kind of a scenario and as with such bike after a couple of minutes of deft handling they make it to the petrol station we make it to the aid station. Than some how we make home. Then again in less than 18hrs we will be back at our patients desk hopping around with those laboured legs appearing to look all is normal. Because if they know 42km they will almost gasp with disbelief: bayalis kilomeetar aaaaaaaaa… so you keep it even minimalist here—nahin wo sidhi utar raha tha pakad liya. Patients recouping: ohh aissaaa. Doctor recouping: Hau.

To use the words of renowned Hyderabadis: Hyderabadi Hau bole to mamu miyan chapter khatam. Kanversesiom Kilose.

    Hau.

Thank you sir. As mentioned earlier, your journey from being a sole (single) runner on the beach road to building a great team to organise a marathon is worth a million dollar.

Wow, what a wonderful way to express your thoughts on your Marathon journey. I can very well relate similar experience I have gone through. The Hyderabad Marathon was truly a great experience for all the runners, but the elevation (48%) on route was the biggest challenge for all new marathon participants. But yes I would agree, this was not just running, rather it was a festival for Runners. Keep running, Stay hydrated and stay fit in the journey of physical, mental, emotional, psychological and spiritual wellbeing.

    Inspiring write-up Suman!
You aptly capture the spirit of the Hyderabad Marathon, bringing back fond memories since my running journey started here in 2013 with the first half marathon! When you recalled initially thinking of runners as ‘crazy’, I smiled since I remembered me being one of those with that elusive ‘crazy’ tag! Great to see your outstanding journey as you joined the ‘crazy’ clan…indeed this is one madness that’s truly worth it.
Although now on a 4 year break from running, your journey is one of the inspirations I needed to come back to where I truly belong…soon!
    Thanks, mate! Susmit
